I quit my 9-5 to build a business, here are 7 lessons:

This month, I quit my 9-5 corporate job to go all in on building my online business. Here are 7 reflections from my experience:

You'll Work 9-9 To Grow It

This might be a controversial one to all the "anti-hustle" folks out there, but hear me out.

There are many conflicting views on whether or not you "need" to work hard.

So I'm just sharing what worked for me.

On one hand, you have Dan Koe promoting the one-person business. I.e:

  • Read, learn, and level up in a skillset/topic
  • Share what you learn and your unique ideas via a personal brand
  • Sell a course/coaching/community with it
  • Work 4 hours a day

On the other hand, you have Alex Hormozi promoting the hustle mentality. I.e:

  • Read, learn, and level up in a skillset/topic
  • Create a product/service to sell from it
  • 10x your input vs your competition
  • Work 12+ hours a day

Sounds like hell right?

Both these guys are the GOATs of their respective fields. They've both had a massive influence on my life.

Whatever route you decide to go down, one thing is clear:

You need to work smart & hard.

You need to find the right things to work on & you need to put in the hours initially to get it up and running.

How will you know what you need to work on if you've never worked on it?

That is to say, how can you work smart when you don't know how to?

I believe that initially, you have to put in the hours to build and learn.

This is especially true if you're in a 9-5 or at school.

You have to live and breathe the skills you're learning.

You need to be obsessed.

Getting from 0-1 is hard but once you've built traction, you can build leverage.

This is the key to getting your time back.

For me, I've split my year into a "building" and a "maintenance" phase.

For 3-6 months, I go hard and "build".

  • I work long hours
  • I cut out my social life
  • Build leverage to scale my agency

For 1-2 months, I slow down and "maintain" what I have and chill out.

  • I'll travel more
  • Meet more people
  • Use the leverage to keep the business running

With this setup, I feel that I can make massive progress and enjoy the fruits of my labor.

There's no getting around putting in the work. It's up to you how fast you want to move.

It Feels Liberating

It's liberating when you're not constantly having to answer to a boss you don't like or do trivial af tasks in a corporate job.

You no longer have to stick to any industrialized 9-5 schedule.

You don't even have to have one. Period.

The world is in the palms of your hands and everything is in your control.

Want to earn more? Build more leverage

Want to work where you want? Book a flight and go

Want to have more time freedom? Take a Monday off

You see, when you have the freedom to do so, you can design your life in a way that suits your long-term goals.

For me, working on things that I know will result in a direct output of growing my agency is something that motivates me beyond comprehension.

You're One Person Away From Changing Your Life

When I trace back how I got to where I am now...

  • Quitting my 9-5
  • Making $10k+/month

The common denominator is the people that I've met.

You see, you're only one person away from changing your life. Let me explain:

When I started on Twitter, I became friends with a guy who commented on one of my tweets.

He then introduced me to his network and through them, I was introduced to a guy who ran a ghostwriting agency.

I wrote for him for 2 months and then stopped to complete Dakota's coaching program.

3 months later, he told me that he was leaving the ghostwriting game and wanted to know whether I wanted to take on his clients.

Of course I accepted. It was a no-brainer.

After 1-2 more months, one of the clients he referred me started to refer me more potential clients...

Eventually, I was earning enough that I didn't need to work a 9-5 anymore.

And that's how I got to this position. Through a series of connections.

It only takes one person to change your life.

You're Forced To Move With Speed

My speed of execution has 100x'd since starting my agency.

When there are constant deadlines and work to do for clients, you won't survive if you're not organized.

We've had to:

  • Hire VAs
  • Hire writers
  • Onboard multiple clients in quick succession

All while making sure we overdeliver for our current clients.

I feel like I've made a year's worth of progress in 2 months simply due to the speed I've had to work at.

Yes, there will be more pressure.

But pressure creates diamonds.

It's the greatest forcing function to level up at the speed of light.

Your Perspective On "Normal" Changes Forever

My perception of money has completely changed.

When I replaced my income with 1-2 clients, "normal life" stopped making sense to me.

Things that I used to think were expensive suddenly felt like pocket change.

You see, when you have the earning potential that a business can provide, day-to-day expenses are completely insignificant.

Now, I mostly talk in 4-5 figure increments.

It's strange because prices haven't really changed much in the grand scheme of things.

But it's your perception of what's "cheap" and "expensive" that goes out the window.

If you do it right, online business can make you an unfathomable amount of money that literally does not make sense to an average person.

So they label it a "scam".

Your Ego Inflates

Something that I've realized in myself is that my ego has inflated a lot since I started to pick up traction with my agency.

I've started to flex:

  • The money I'm making
  • How I'm able to employ others
  • The types of clients I'm working with

It's something that I feel a lot of young guys go through when they make their first bag.

We think that we're on top of the world.

That we're indestructible.

But it needs to get checked. A big ego repels all high-value people in this world.

And I don't want that.

I saw a friend's ego inflate when his music career started taking off.

And I'm finally starting to realize why.

This is something I'm still working on...

But I'll get there.

You Have The Freedom To Take It Wherever You Want

Unshackled from the 9-5, you can take your life wherever you want.

You can spend it exploring the depths of the world.

You can build the next $1Billion company.

You can impact millions of people.

You can bend reality to your will.

For me?

I want to complete the game of life.

I want to explore everything life has to offer.

I want to meet people doing amazing things.

And now I have the freedom to do so.

I'm excited to see what the future holds.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this as always.

See ya next week.

One of the most powerful mindset shifts I've learned recently is the ability to play long-term games when it comes to money/business. For example, when building an agency, the short term mindset would be to keep as much money as possible, whether that's doing everything yourself, or paying employees as little as possible. Let's say you're making $20k/month and have an 80% margin on it ($16k/mo profit). Now the short-term view would be "let me just keep on doing everything myself" or "hire a...

One thing I’ve started to realize blatantly clearly is that the success of a business is inversely proportional to the number of beliefs you hold. It was never about the tactics. The how to get rich quick schemes. Why? Because they all work. You call them a scam because they didn’t work FOR YOU. Minor difference there. Every single thing that you’ve pursued and failed at was never down to the lack of knowledge. You already know this but knowledge can be found everywhere if you look hard...

You came to X to build your personal brand because you saw so many others before you built their audience successfully and made good money from it. So you decide to go all in and build your brand too. Doesn’t look too hard right? You post and post and post…and nothing… 2 months go by and you get demotivated and give up. “Maybe this isn’t for me”. So you take a break and go back to working the 9-5 you hate or the college where you struggle to pay attention to in any class. Another month goes...
